How does an SSL certificate work ?

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is an internet data encryption protocol that consists of highly complex mathematical processes to both code and decode the information sent between web servers and your customer's web browser.

40-bit, 56-bit, 128-bit and 256-bit tells you the size and increasing complexity of the code key. Like a longer password, a larger key has more possible combinations and is therefore more secure. This makes unauthorised interception and decryption of data transmissions (hacking) practically impossible.

When a browser or operating system encounters an SSL certificate, it checks to make sure that the certificate is valid and trusted. An SSL certificate is trusted if it is signed by a “trusted” or pre-installed root certificate and is still current (i.e. has not expired).

How will visitors know that your website is secured by SSL ?

Your visitors can instantly recognise when their web browser has connected to a RapidSSL secured site :

  1. The website page URL in the browser address bar changes from http:// to https://
  2. A Locked Padlock appears the browser address bar. (See above.)
  3. When the visitor clicks the Padlock, a message is displayed to verify the secured and encrypted connection.
  4. A trust mark like this RapidSSL site seal is generally added to each secured page on the website.

It is possible (as I have done) to configure your entire website as SSL secured https:// pages, like Google has announced they prefer.

How can I confirm my SSL Certificate is properly configured and working ?
